LEARN how to control weeds

Woody weeds like blackberry and gorse can be difficult to control. They rob you of productive land, create an increased fire risk, and provide a harbour for vermin and snakes.

Once established, woody and noxious weeds develop deep, robust root systems and dense foliage. To achieve long term control, an integrated approach is the best option. An integrated approach uses a number of methods to manage weeds. These methods may include slashing and grazing to complement herbicides.

Post application pasture management is also very important to minimise re-establishment of woody and noxious weeds. Healthy and dense pasture makes it difficult for weeds to establish and therefore managing pasture in conjunction with control methods will provide the best long term result.

When developing a plan to control woody and noxious weeds, factors to consider include:-

  • Select the correct herbicide which targets your individual weed problem. Each herbicides has particular strengths against certain weeds. Carefully read the product label to assist with correct selection and use.
  • Select the correct wetting agent or penetrant to maximise herbicide penetration and uptake by the weeds. (refer to the product label for details)
  • If the weeds have been previously grazed, slashed or burnt, ensure that there has been adequate foliage regrowth to ensure that the  plant is not under stress and that sufficient foliage area is present to allow for  uptake of sprayed herbicide.
  • Only spray during active growth periods
  • Ensure thorough spray coverage of all foliage
  • Consider the use of spray marking dyes to ensure thorough coverage and also to keep track of where you have sprayed.
  • Retreat regrowth as required.
  • Re-seed and fertilise treated areas to promote healthy pasture growth to minimise re-establishment of woody and noxious weeds.

Ignoring the above will result in poor initial weed control and high levels of regrowth.
The above are general considerations only. Always refer to the product label for detailed instructions before using.

ALWAYS ADD A WETTING AGENT OR PENETRANT

Weed Force Holdfast wetting agent & penetrant is a premium wetting agent and is recommend for use with both Gusto and Renovate.

Refer to the product labels for more information.

PREVENT How to prevent weeds from coming back

Dealing with regrowth:

After the initial herbicide treatment, some follow up treatment of any regrowth is likely to be required. Allow regrowth to gain a reasonable leaf area before retreating as a good receptive surface area of foliage is necessary to collect sufficient herbicide to translocate to the roots. This will achieve the highest level of weed control.
Read the product label for specific instructions for the product being applied.

Long term management of woody and noxious weeds:

Maintaining lush, vigorous pasture is the best way to keep weeds at bay.
Post application pasture management including re-seeding and fertilising will minimise re-establishment and result in the best long term control.

SPRAY tips and hints

Ensure thorough coverage of foliage.

Only spray weeds when they are not stressed and actively growing. Some herbicides have recommended seasonal application timing to spray. This information can be found on the product label.

Use high pressure hand gun application to penetrate dense foliage

Always add a wetting agent or penetrant as directed on the product label. Failure to do this will result in poor weed control and high levels of regrowth.

Always read the product label for specific instructions for the product being applied.

CAUTION to be aware of
